Before you consider flying with a digital camera read this information. It might be a life saver!

No tourist wants to go on vacation and view scenic landscapes or other interesting attractions (including their own family!) without bringing along their trusted digital camera, and that includes me!

Unfortunately, there’s always the risk that your digital camera may be damaged or stolen at the airport. There are a few steps you can take, though, when flying with a digital camera to prevent this and other problems from happening.

First, make sure you know the regulations at the airports from which you’ll be flying. The FAA does not prevent travelers from taking camera bags and digital cameras as carry-on items. But it never hurts to check for any changes before you head to the airport, especially with all the recent threats at many airports around the world.

If you do take your digital camera on board with you, make sure to keep a close watch on it at all times. Camera bags are fairly easy for thieves to spot. Keep your digital camera close to you at all times to discourage any thieves.

If you check your digital camera, invest in a hard case for it, otherwise it will be damaged despite anything the airline staff may tell you.

This will provide more protection from overzealous airport baggage handlers. Be warned, though, that if a baggage handler or other airport personnel is intent on stealing your digital camera, a hard case won’t stop them. I have had stuff stolen from locked cases with no sign of the lock being broken – they are really clever at this stuff, so be warned!

You can, though, decide to have your digital camera insured before taking it on a vacation. This might not make financial sense if you have a lower-end model.

However, if you’ve purchased a high-end, expensive digital camera, insurance might be an affordable way to protect yourself financially. It won’t stop the disappointment of a camera being stolen, but it will give you back the money to replace it if it does get stolen.

Flying with a digital camera doesn’t have to be a hassle, especially if you follow these basic steps and take a sensible approach.

Enjoy your vacation!
